Underdog Veterans Make Their Way to National Final; HOCKEY

VETERAN hockey club The Teessiders have overcome the odds to reach the fi-nal of a national competition.

The Stockton-based team will take on Henley-on-Thames Hockey Club in the final of the NOW Pensions Over 40s Trophy in Nottingham tomorrow after finding success in a competition usually dominated by southern clubs from the national league.

The journey to the final began back in January with a comfortabe 9-2 win at Keswick/Whitehaven in Cockermouth, followed by a more competitive 3-1 win over Tynemouth.

The local lads were lucky to receive a home draw against Crewe in the next round, and they took the advantage to dominate the tie, which the 2-1 scoreline did not reflect.

Reaching as far as the quarter-finals was a success in itself, but The Teessiders visited Nottingham to take on National League club side West Bridgford with no intention of ending their run.

In a fantastic game The Teessiders found themselves 3-2 down with only 90 seconds left, but some superb pressing and creativity saw a flurry of goals as they ended up with a 5-4 win. …
