Egglescliffe Fight Back to Clinch Quarter Final Place; RUGBY LEAGUE

EGGLESCLIFFE School's Year 9 rugby league team has made it through to the last eight of the biggest competition in the country.

Although the school predominantly plays rugby union, it has entered the Champions Cup for the past three years, previously losing out in the county or regional finals.

But they soundly beat their previous best - and all expectation - to get so far.

The team had some brilliant results on their way to the last eight, including a 48-24 win over Shotton Hall, who they lost to in the County final previously, and a 72-22 win over St John's Bishop Auckland.

A closer 22-12 win followed over Astley High School, from Northumberland.

But the biggest test came in the last round against Dowadales School, from Barrow in Furness, which has a strong reputation on the national stage having produced schoolboy internationals and cup-winning teams on numerous occasions.

A slow start from Egglescliffe saw them trail 12-0 early on, but some great defensive play resulted in a turnover which allowed them to break as Morgan Passman scored underneath the posts. …
