Jobs Scam Hits Border Town

BACKPACKING scam victims are turning up in Goondiwindi on the promise of jobs that do not exist.

A scam, starting from online advertising website Gumtree, promises backpackers fruit picking work and accommodation in the small border town.

The victims pay a $50 fee into a bank account to secure accommodation - only to find themselves out of pocket when the job and accommodation fail to materialise.

Border Rivers Chamber of Commerce executive officer Hamish Gale said he started receiving calls from victims about the scam last week.

"People have been paying $50, which is supposed to be towards securing accommodation, and a job to pick fruit and chillis, which we don't have any of out here.

"The office address they're given is a public building - either a school or church.

"A little bit of investigation by myself found that the bank account is an Australia Post pre-paid card. …
