NEWCASTLE UNITED have gone 20 years without a Premier League win at Liverpool and with the Kop side knowing victory may be needed at Aneld this Sunday, there could be every chance of another year of hurt for the much maligned Magpies.

For some reason it all seems to go dramatically wrong for Newcastle against the Reds on Merseyside.

And for the loyal fans who travel to Aneld every year they've witnessed plenty of pain.

Here are of the most shocking moments during the two decade drought.

"COLLYMORE CLOSING IN...."Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 Wednesday April 3 1996 WHEN people recall the title race of 1996 they look back at this xture as one of the turning points.

Indeed, part of THAT 12-point lead was chopped away here in the space of 22 minutes.

With Newcastle leading 3-2 thanks to Tino Asprilla's crack-crack ing goal with the outside of his boot, Stan Collymore - who had hardly justied his massive PS8.5million price tag - pegged the game back to 3-3. Even a point wouldn't have been a bad result for Keegan's side.

But the scenes that followed still haunt Newcastle fans to this day as Ian Rush and John Barnes exchanged passes before Collymore riY=ed him in the 90th minute, with Pavel Srnicek caught out at his near post.

e commentary from Martin Tyler screaming "Collymore closing in!" was followed by Keegan hanging his head in the Toon dugout.

Keegan said he never regretted continuing to Y=ow forward - but many feel that this was the game to shut shop.

LIGHTNING CAN STRIKE TWICE Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 Monday March 10 1997 THERE was pre-game banter that the scoreline of 4-3 could be repeated in this game.

Indeed, the last seven-goal thriller had led to a special video of the game being released on Merseyside while the 1996 edition of this encounter has been replayed as a Sky classic on countless occasions.

But surely it couldn't happen again? Well with Liverpool 3-0 down after 42 minutes it didn't look like it. Keegan had quit as Toon boss months earlier and his replacement wasn't enjoying his early days in charge.

One Toon fan even entered the eld at 3-0 and threw his shirt at Kenny Dalglish with the garment landing on the Scot's head in embarrasing fashion on his return to Liverpool.

But an injury-hit Newcastle team somehow fought back.

Keith Gillespie struck what looked like a consolation with 19 minutes left. Asprilla made it 3-2 with three minutes left and suddenly it was game on.

When Warren Barton grabbed the equaliser two minutes later and booted the microphone behind the goal it looked like the great escape was complete.

Newcastle managed to collapse in stoppage time as Robbie Fowler scored another winner in dying stages to set up ANOTHER 4-3 loss.

Only Newcastle United could manage this.

THE DAY NEWCASTLE HAD DONE THE HARD WORK Liverpool 4 Newcastle 2 Monday Dec 28 1998 THE Magpies were hoping for a bit of festive cheer for the Toon Army with Ruud Gullit now in charge at Newcastle.

And things seemed to be going swimmingly for the Mags as Nobby Solano's cracker in front of the Kop red them 1-0 up on 29 minutes.

But when Didi Hammann was sent o a minute later United came crashing back down to earth.

Newcastle just got on with the job though and with Alan Shearer dropping back into mideld they managed to hold the Reds and even went 2-0 up through Swedish Y=op Andreas Andersson.

Even as the clock ticked to the 67th minute it looked like Newcastle could win at Aneld. But as goals from Michael Owen (67) and (80) then Karlheinz Riedle (71) and (84) Y=owed it turned into another sorry loss.

SEEING RED AGAIN Liverpool 2 Newcastle 1 Saturday Mar 25 2000 THE Magpies looked rejuvenated under Bobby Robson but they still couldn't break their Aneld hoodoo. …
