Indie Band Honing Their Craft; Ahead of Evolution Emerging, SARAH JEFFERY Catches Up with Crooked Hands

NORTH East alt-indie band Crooked Hands are one of the acts playing at this year's Evolution Emerging.

They formed in 2012 when singer-songwriter Chris Brown decided to recruit four other musicians.

Guitarist Tom Booth explains: "Chris used to T write songs on his own and kind of started out making demos, then recruited the others to join him and then I met them at a house party.

"We all kind of bonded through the same sort of music and started writing together. Then we did a few gigs to try and find our feet."

Over the next year, the band spent time honing their craft in and around their hometown, including playing for the esteemed Communion on one of their Newcastle shows and supporting the likes of The Lake Poets, I Dream in Colour and Let's Buy Happiness.

While gigging around the North East Crooked Hands spent time developing their sound and drew comparisons to City & Colour, Bon Iver and Frightened Rabbit.

Tom says: "We've kind of gone through a little T bit of change. Initially, we used to sound very like Frightened Rabbit and similar bands producing harmony based folk music.

"But now we've taken elements of that and are now in line with bands like Bombay Bicycle Club and that sort of thing. We're heavily influenced by lots of different things, especially the music we're into."

Alongside Tom in Crooked T Hands is Chris Brown (lead vocals and guitar), Liam Smith (bass guitar), Robbie Houston (drums) and Nick Blaszczyszyn (piano / keyboards) Crooked Hands released their debut single Under in February 2013, which they recorded with James Hall from Lets Buy Happiness, to widespread acclaim from the blogosphere.

It also picked up airplay from esteemed DJs Tom T Robinson, Nick Roberts and Bethan Elfyn as well being featured in an episode of American TV series 90210.

Following their debut single the five-piece released their second single The Stream in June which is the lead track on their forthcoming EP. …
