Young Guns Go Down Fighting in Defence of 47th Battalion Title

BUNDABERG was unable to defend its 47th Battalion title, going down 38-4 in the final yesterday, but coach Dave Pearce said he was proud of his players' performances in Gladstone.

Pearce said with a young list at his disposal the runner-up result was better than he hoped for.

"I was not disappointed in the boys at all. We had nine Under-19 players in the side," Pearce said.

"They performed well above my expectations."

Pearce was confident before representative carnival kicked off his forwards could match it with the opposition to lay a platform for his backs and its three pool games it did.

Starting the two-day carnival Bundaberg, which featured several Hervey Bay and Wallaroos players, beat Central Highlands 26-14 before backing up later in the day to defeat Rockhampton 26-22, and after just 16 hours rest the Bears held off a determined South West Country to win 20-10.

South West Country had the advantage of a massive forward pack but Pearce's selection policy proved to be correct. …
