FROM professional advice to Pilates classes and stop smoking schemes - steelmaker SSI has a range of health and wellbeing support for its 1,800 workers.

An occupational health team is there to help employees in the workplace.

The team consists of an occupational health physician (a specialist doctor), the occupational health manager (a specialist nurse advisor), an occupational health nurse and occupational health technicians. They provide a comprehensive service to employees and contractors on the site.

They do not replace the role of colleagues' GPs nor do they act as a walkin facility.

Colleagues can self-refer themselves if they have a medical problem which is affecting or may affect their work but this will normally be done by their manager or the HR department.

They can also self-refer if they need to access the physiotherapy or counselling service.

Any workplace accident or illness is responded to by the emergency medical and rescue response team.

The occupational health team will try to ensure that everyone is receiving the correct medical treatment for any condition they may be suffering, so that as early a return to fitness is possible.

Sometimes individuals may not be able to perform their full role or attend their normal working hours, in which case this is discussed with their manager how adjustments can be made. If they are having difficulty accessing any necessary treatment, such as physiotherapy or counselling, then this can be quickly organised by the team.

SSI UK's employee's benefit package can also allow early access to specialist opinions and treatment. Health surveillance sometimes results in the team advising that someone is removed from a specific aspect of their work or that a particular activity is modified.

Monitoring is carried out under SSI UK's statutory obligations but the business goes beyond this and carries out additional surveillance and screening as a responsible and caring employer.

Health surveillance also acts as an important check of the controls SSI UK has in place. If any issues are discovered then controls, including personal protective equipment, in that area are reviewed and if necessary improved. …
