SOME people might think a round trip of eight hours of travelling to play an 80-minute game of Aussie rules is madness, but it's something that may have to be done if the sport is to flourish in the region.

For two seasons the teams in the Wide Bay AFL have played each other five times a year -- for me getting belted by Hervey Bay once is enough, but five times... too much -- and it was time for the league to expand, or possibly fade away.

At the weekend the four Wide Bay teams played the first of two games against QAFA (B) (Queensland Australian Football Association) North clubs and from a player's point of view it was a success.

Not just because I enjoyed winning a game for a change.

It was great to play a different opponent on a different ground and hopefully the two games this season are seen as a success by all the clubs and the expanded league continues.

The only sticking point would be what happens with the reserve grade and juniors (Under-15 and U17)? …
