CLARENCE Valley businesses Westlawn Finance and Harwood Marine are in the running to win awards in this year's Northern Rivers Business Awards.

Westlawn is a finalist in the Excellence in Business and Excellence in Business Ethics categories.

Harwood Marine director Ross Roberts is one of four finalists in the Business Leaders category.

Mr Roberts, who returned to Australia yesterday from "chasing business overseas", said he was surprised at the nomination.

"Why they picked me out I don't really understand," he said.

"I have a great team of people working with me who are all tremendously skilled in their roles.

"The other director here, Gio Cervella, does wonderful work and should be in the running for an award."

Harwood Marine has operated from its base on the Clarence River at Harwood since the mid 1960s and is entering a period of expansion.

Mr Roberts said the company aims to create a marine precinct around the current site and has a proposal before Clarence Valley Council to rezone two parcels of land neighbouring the site for industrial use. …
