Columbia Hot on the Heels of Leaders Diggers

FOOTBALL: The gap between the two Gympie teams and the rest of the reserve grade Fraser Coast League is widening by the week, with both Columbia and Diggers division 2 again recording big wins on Saturday.

After a 4-0 victory over lowly Tinana the week before, Columbia took on Doon Villa at One Mile Ovals, and doubles to Kurt Long, Jason Lord and Daniel Mills and a goal to Steven Heim helped them to a 7-1 smashing of the Maryborough side.

"Obviously it was a good result, but the way we came out and played really well right from the start was the most pleasing aspect," captain Joel Bond said.

"Even though they scored right at the death, we didn't take our foot off the pedal despite being well in front.

"Daniel Mills played probably his best match of the year, which was great to see because he's been a bit quiet the last few weeks."

Columbia will play fifth-placed Bayside Strikers this weekend in Hervey Bay.

Diggers still remain the team to beat though, after staying clear of Columbia at the top of the ladder with a 5-0 win over Granville in Maryborough. …
