THE owners of a Stockton takeaway have been ordered to pay more than PS8,000 because of their dirty, rat dropping-ridden kitchen.

Amjad Gulraiz, 46, and Mohammad Nadeem, 36, who share ownership of Chilli Pepper, on Dovecot Street, appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court yesterday. The court heard how Stockton Council's environmental health officers visited the takeaway last November to investigate a complaint about rat activity.

The kitchen was filthy with food debris and grease build-up throughout, and officers found evidence of rats in both food prepping areas and the servery. It was also discovered that there was no hot water, soap or hygienic hand drying facilities at the wash basin.

Both Gulraiz, of Grange Road, Thornaby, and Nadeem, of Windermere Road, Stockton, pleaded guilty to eight offences under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations Act 2006.
