Volunteer Stays on as Chief Water Boy

RUNNING: Warwick Pentath-run water boy Gavin Stewart took on the job only because they needed more volunteers.

Now, he is preparing to organise all of the water stations for the 10th time ahead of this weekend's event.

"I helped out because there was a call for more people to help out with the water stations," Stewart said.

"It's not something I saw myself doing, but I have enjoyed it since I started."

Stewart said it had been good to experience events from a different perspective.

"As a runner myself, it has been good to experience what it's like to organise instead," he said.

"As a runner you might whinge and grumble about things, but no one pays attention to how much work goes in behind the scenes.

"You spend all weekend in a ute and get soaked in either water or Gatorade.

"It can be logistically challenging."

Stewart said the best part about volunteering as a water boy was seeing the event run smoothly.

"It's good when it all comes together," Stewart said.

"When people leave the event happy and then they come back the following year, that's the biggest endorsement.

"The numbers seem to be growing, so the event must be doing something right."

Despite his busy schedule running the water stations, Stewart still competes in an event or two if possible.

"I would expect to do one or two events," he said.

"It will just depend how things go on the stations; time gets away.

"I might do the 5km run and cross country."

Stewart has been training, just in case his schedule opens up enough to compete.

"I've been running 5-8km three to four times a week plus doing the park run most weeks," Stewart said.

"I will only run if the water is set up though."

One man who will be running for sure is Chris Fox. …
