FORGET State of Origin. The result is a foregone conclusion anyway. How about Straight of Origin?

Queensland's straight racetrack at Capalaba will conduct a new feature event called the Straight of Origin, at about the time Queensland will be wrapping up the result of the famous rugby league contests.

The concept is that there will be heats for greyhounds trained in Queensland and NSW on Saturday, June 28.

From those heats there will be semi-finals on Saturday, July 5.

The number of semi-finals depends on how many heats are run.

The states will be kept separate until the third day of the series which is Saturday, July 12.

Four 'Maroons' and four 'Blues'' will compete in the final.

The winner receives $10,000, second $2500 and third $1250.

At the request of control body Racing Queensland, the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club is assisting with the running of Capalaba.

"There's an 18 months management agreement involving Racing Queensland, Capalaba and Ipswich which started in January this year," Ipswich club president Bob Essex said.

"In the three months that we have been there, Capalaba has turned in a nice profit. Support is very good, membership for example has risen from in the 30s to 90. People don't become a member unless they want to support the place."

Essex has a bold plan for Capalaba.

"I'd like to see the club racing on Saturday morning with TAB and Sky coverage," Essex said.

"The cost would be around $80,000 to set the track up for coverage and Racing Queensland has said it would assist if we can give them a convincing business plan.

"We will attempt to provide that to them.

"Capalaba would slot in nicely among New Zealand thoroughbred events and other races televised on a Saturday morning."

Respectable times

RACING resumed at the Showgrounds last Tuesday after the Ipswich Show. …
