LUIS SUAREZ is only likely to face England in the World Cup if he makes an extraordinary recovery from keyhole surgery on his knee, a specialist said today.

The Uruguay striker was having an operation today after he damaged his meniscus during training for next month's finals.

England meet Uruguay in a Group D clash in Sao Paulo on June 19 and that is exactly four weeks today, the minimum period that Suarez is expected to be out for.

Knee specialist Matt Stride from Isokinetic London spelled out today the challenge Suarez faces to feature in that match.

"It is dependent on the extent of the damage, which will not be found until the keyhole surgery, but four weeks is not unrealistic," said Stride.

"The torn part of the meniscus can just be removed. There is no way they would be able to repair a tear in that amount of time so they will opt for removal, which gives a much quicker rehab time.

"His fitness will inevitably drop after the operation but the advantage of keyhole surgery is that the wounds are so small that they will heal very quickly.

Within a few days, he should be able to exercise in a hydro-therapy pool to get his heart rate up. Provided the rehab is intense, about seven hours a day, and he is well monitored, which he will be, a four-week turnaround would be about right."

The absence of Suarez would be a huge boost for England given that the Liverpool striker was the Premier League's top scorer this season with 31 goals and he was also named double Player of the Year.

He missed the first five League games of the season due to his ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic but after his return he started every top-flight match.

He has a virtually unblemished injury record since joining Liverpool and Uruguay officials were stunned to learn that their star man had been sidelined although they are still hopeful of him making the finals. …
