BILLY Rumbel, the young bullrider seriously injured during the rodeo at the Coffs Harbour Show, accepts he is lucky to be alive after he was trampled by a bucking bull.

The 17-year-old rookie rider was thrown from the bull in just his second rodeo last Friday night.

Billy's mother Tammie Goldthorpe said she was traumatised by the incident, which saw her son rushed to Coffs Harbour Hospital and later airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

Billy suffered a broken jaw and had corrective surgery to realign his top and bottom jaw, plus surgery for a fracture at the base of his skull and a broken collarbone.

"We believe he was thrown off the bull after four seconds and stomped on the face and neck," his mother said.

"It was the second ride - the first ride he was thrown off straight away.

"His first time was about two weeks before at the Macksville show in the junior section, where he received a first place. …
