SKIN cancers that look like pimples are more likely to go undiagnosed and lead to melanoma deaths, according to new research published in the Australian Journal of Dermatology.

While the research is most applicable to people living in Victoria, Dr Jeffrey Keir from the Northern Rivers Skin Cancer Clinic says lentiginous melanomas are the biggest concern for Northern Rivers residents.

"The biggest issue here is that the most common type, lentiginous, is not a melanoma sub-type that people are taught to look for," he said. "It's only recently been recognised and characterised."
