Folk Tunes Fill Air at Open Day

INFECTIOUS Russian folk tunes and other curious cadences flooded Magellan St, Lismore during Northern Rivers Conservatorium's anticipated Open Day.

Held from 10am to 2pm yesterday, families flocked to the event, which featured live performances, tours and the chance to try a variety of instruments.

Youngster Will Myers-Binge, a budding keyboard player, was having a blast getting tutored on the trumpet by brass tutor Dave Stephenson.

"It's my first time having a go and I thought it'd be easier," Will exclaimed.

"But it's heaps of fun. I'm going to have a go at the drums and trombone next."

Will was just one of many kids taking the opportunity to test out a range of pianos, drums and brass, woodwind and string instruments.

His grandmother Therese McDermott praised Open Day, saying it was a fun way for kids to improve self confidence and focus.

Meanwhile, the World Music Ensemble took to the stage to belt out some catchy numbers, which were appreciated by the relaxed crowd. …
