THE leading cause of blindness in Australia can be managed and halted.

Macular degeneration is a disease affecting the part of the eye that allows us to process fine, detailed vision, the vision that enables us to read and recognise faces.

Losing this capability is horrendous, but there are some simple things you can do to save eyesight.

One of the ways to detect whether you might have macular degeneration is to look at horizontal lines -- if they appear wavy, you need to get your vision checked.

If you think you're missing something in the middle of your vision -- another reason to get your vision checked.

And if you're experiencing colours as less vivid or clear -- you need an eye check up.

Macular degeneration could include one or all of the above symptoms.

Macular degeneration, sometimes called age related macular degeneration, is the leading cause of blindness in Australia.
