IT is not too often that one hundred candles need to be ordered for a birthday cake, but that rare occurrence arose recently when a rather spritely Helen Levitt celebrated her 100th birthday.

The Nambour Bowls Club member has achieved many things in her lifetime and "setting fire" to a lovely cake stacked with candles was always going to be another one of them.

She started her bowling career in 1964 at the age of 50 and just four years was elected treasurer, a role she performed for an astonishing 32 years.

Among her greatest achievements was winning the club championship triples with Nada O'Donnell and Flo Achurch six times and running a close second on two other occasions.

"Her prowess on the greens was equally impressive," club spokesman Graham Morton said.

Moreton said Helen had left an indelible mark on lawn bowls in the local area and her beloved Nambour Bowls Club.

"She was a member of winning fours and pairs teams and also finished runner-up in the club singles. …
