A RIDER has told of her dramatic beach rescue after she was thrown from her horse and airlifted to hospital.

Experienced horse rider Maxine Wharton, 58, sparked a huge rescue effort on Sunday after she fell from her horse Freddie on Redcar beach amid concern she was suffering serious spinal injuries.

The alarm was raised after a member of the public spotted the grandmother and mum-of-one's horse on the loose near the sand dunes at 9.50am.

Maxine's friend Becky had seen Freddie take a stumble and rushed to stay by her side until the RNLI arrived at the location, about half a mile towards South Gare.

Maxine, a HR manager who lives in High Leven, near Yarm, said: "I'm a bit sore and stiff.

"We were having a really good ride on the beach, a friend and I. "We were on our way back up to the car park after having a canter in the sea.

"That's when my friend saw Freddie stumble and that's the last I remember. …
