MACKAY homeowners are certainly feeling the cost of living pressure, with the region $13.6million behind in rates.

Finance and Technology portfolio councillor Ross Walker said this had increased since the same time last year, when the region had $9.8million worth of overdue rates.

"I think it's a sign of the times in Mackay," Cr Walker said. "Obviously we don't like it when ratepayers are struggling to pay their rates and there are many reasons for that.

"I think there's a lot of people struggling, a lot of businesses are struggling and a lot of people are unsure about whether they'll have a job or not into the future."

If you're one of those people behind in rates, don't expect a debt collector to come knocking. …
