HARTLEPOOL College of Further Education's annual Engineering Project presentation day had more than 90 exhibitors showcasing their work - the largest number yet.

The groups that took part in the event included HNC mechanical, manufacturing, electrical and instrumentation engineering students as well as Level 3 Diploma students. The majority of the learners are apprentices who work in local industry. Most of the projects were workbased and included improvements in safety or cost saving ideas which will be used in practice.

More than 50 representatives from industry and other stakeholders at the college voted for the best projects on show. The feedback was outstanding as the quality of the work on show has improved yet again from the previous year.

Michael Casey, head of engineering at the college said: "The project presentation day has been running now for around 10 years and it was designed to encourage the college's apprentices and students to develop their skills in articulating technical information. We used to do a more conventional presentation to a group of tutors, but this didn't do justice to the level and standard of work as this was only seen by a relatively small number of staff - the exhibition type approach means that the work is shared with dozens of visitors asking a range of technical and general interest questions." There were a number of local and regional employers present at the event. Craig Willoughby, training and development officer at Tata Steel said: "The event was a great success for the students as they had to speak to various employers and explain their project and how it would either save money or prove more efficient for their employer.

"Tata Steel had seven BTEC Level 3 students exhibiting and five higher education students. We support our students every step of the way and this exhibition approach that Hartlepool College provides is invaluable for their development. …
