Peugeot Hatch Is a Sound Buy

SINCE its launch not too long ago in 2012, the Peugeot 208 quickly become a firm favourite with many buyers who sought out a stylish, practical and economic family hatchback.

Pitched against the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta, it started off life with something of an ace up its sleeve.

For it came from a long family line that gave us the Peugeot 205, perhaps the finest small hatch that has ever been produced.

That said, the 208 still would still have to turn it on to be a contender against the stiff supermini competition in the segment which is the second most popular in the UK.

However, that turned out to be no real problem for the French fancy which sold more than 38,000 units last year alone, to put it into the top-10 selling models in the UK.

At launch, Peugeot forecast that more than two-thirds of all 208 sales would be to private buyers and that three-quarters of all sales would be powered by a new highly-efficient 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

With this little 80bhp unit returning a combined fuel economy figure of 62.8mpg and an extra urban figure of 72.4mpg, it was small wonder Peugeot put so much faith in that version.

Whatever the power unit, the 208 was lighter and is somewhat smaller on the outside than the 207 it replaced, yet inside there was far more leg and shoulder room.

It also offered superb comfort, thanks to the trendy, well-equipped cabin which, apart from lower trim models, included a full-colour touchscreen information centre, which for many buyers was an essential accessory. …
