Cottrell to Go for Singles Gold at Glasglow Games; Aussie Coach Says Ex-Coast Bowler Deserved Spot

LAWN BOWLS: Sunshine Coast product Kelsey Cottrell has secured the coveted women's singles berth in the Australian bowls team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

In March, Cottrell was included in the full team of 17 to compete in Scotland, and yesterday Bowls Australia announced the disciplines and respective positions each bowler would play.

The 24-year-old will also skip the women's triples, with Australian captain Lynsey Clarke to lead and Cabramatta's Karen Murphy bowling second.

National coach Steve Glasson emphasised the decisions were tough because of the overall strength, ability and flexibility of the team and the capacity of its members to play a number of roles.

This, he said, was a positive.

"We have just completed our second-last training camp in Melbourne before we head to the UK, so we have had a great opportunity to look at the entire team in a number of simulated matches in different disciplines and positions," Glasson said. …
