Weld a Good Bet to Claim His First Classic Success

DERMOT Weld is taken to clinch his first British Classic triumph in over a decade as Tarfasha holds sound claims in the Investec Oaks at Epsom.

Considering his staggering success on the world stage over the years, it may come as a surprise to many he master of Rosewell House has saddled just two previous Classic winners on British turf, Blue Wind claiming the Oaks in 1991 and Refuse To Bend striking gold in the 2000 Guineas 11 years ago.

While his great friend and rival Aidan O'Brien's campaign has not yet found top gear, Weld has already wracked up nearly 40 winners in his homeland, achieved with a tremendous 30 per cent strike-rate.

Tarfasha has done her bit with a hugely-impressive comeback victory at Naas in the Blue Wind Stakes, named in honour of Weld's previous Epsom heroine.

The daughter of Teofilo showed quality form as a juvenile, but that seasonal debut was easily her best effort to date, showing she has done well during the winter and a mile and a quarter on testing ground holds no fears for her.

As a half-sister to stout stayers Saddler's Rock and Galileo Rock, the step up to a mile and a half could bring about even more improvement in Tarfasha, with Weld insistent she will be a more potent force on a sounder surface.

Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Marvellous rates the obvious danger, but there must be a chance this will come a touch too soon after a slog in the mud at the Curragh less than a fortnight ago and Tarfasha is the value call to claim Classic glory.

Just The Judge is given another chance to get her career back on track in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.

Narrowly beaten by Sky Lantern in last year's 1000 Guineas before a brilliant display in the Irish equivalent, Charlie Hills' filly was disappointing on her return to action in Newmarket's Earl Of Sefton Stakes. …
