I'VE always been a tiny bit envious of those people with summer birthdays. They get a choice over whether to have their parties inside or out if the weather is playing along nicely.

Of course, it's not just birthdays. Weddings, christenings and other special events seem that much more special with a bit of sunshine and space for the kids to run around without getting under everyone's feet.

And everything just looks so much fresher and prettier in the sunshine! Today I'm going to indulge myself and pretend I am organising the perfect summer party that will make any garden of whatever size or style look breathtaking.

It's a real opportunity to indulge in a little fantasy dressing-up of your garden - and the great thing is that you do not have to be in the least green-fingered to do it!

Even if your garden is just full of pots filled with dead foliage and unruly shrubs, it doesn't matter.

It's amazing what some twinkling lights and a few splashes of colour can do to a tired space.

With the right bits and bobs you can make your garden party perfect.

No garden party is complete without bunting. If you have a narrow plot, get as much as you can and string it from one side to the other. Or use it to decorate a tatty fence.
