Ring Road May Lead to Bypass

BUILDING the Mackay ring road could be the catalyst needed to begin the Walkerston Bypass.

The prediction was made by Member for Dawson George Christensen, who spoke alongside acting Prime Minister Warren Truss, in Mackay yesterday to spruik the long-awaited ring road.

"Part of this Mackay ring road actually shaves, I think, in the vicinity of $40million off the top of the cost of the Walkerston Bypass," Mr Christensen said.

"So if we do this road perhaps it's the catalyst for looking at Walkerston Bypass."

On the bypass, Mr Truss said the Federal Government was working with the state on proposed upgrades to roads west of Mackay.

"We have some money on the table that can potentially be used," he said.

"I know that substantial work has been done and it's too early really to make the decisions about how that money should be spent, until we know more of the plans."

Mr Truss was more committed to funding for the notorious Peak Downs Hwy. …
