THE capital's skyline is being transformed, the London property market has been booming, and along with major investment in infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and HS2, this has led to an increasing demand for building professionals.

The Construction Industry Training Board has predicted that 182,000 new jobs will be created between 2014 and 2019 in the sector, highlighting particular areas of skills shortages such as quantity surveying.

The growth in the sector also means more roles for highly-skilled professionals and for those looking to further their careers, specialise or to tap into growth areas, London South Bank University (LSBU) is a centre of excellence.

As the largest provider of Building and Town Planning master courses in the UK last year, according to Guardian Postgraduate Subject League Tables, LSBU has a long history of educating engineering and building-related professionals, with its roots stretching right back to 1904 to the London Council School of Building.

Also voted number one university for undergraduate prospects in the building field, according to The Complete University Guide University Subject League Tables (2014), LSBU offers postgraduate programmes spanning surveying, real estate and asset management, as well as construction project management, architecture, civil and structural engineering, building services engineering, housing and town planning. Conversion courses are available for those wanting to move into the property sector, as well as highly specialised masters in areas such as building services engineering.

STRONG TRACK RECORD Darren James, a senior lecturer in construction technology at LSBU as well as the senior admissions tutor for the Department of the Built Environment, says: "We have a strong track record in getting students ready for top-level jobs, with exceptionally good employability. The reputation of our courses is widely considered to be of the highest standard among employers who send their professionals here for postgraduate study.

"However, we also have students who are financing their own tuition, either to further their careers or to move into the sector after gaining a degree in a different field. They select LSBU because of the range of programmes, the strong industry links, the large pool of alumni who talk to our students and the professional accreditation."

LSBU is at the vanguard of new developments in the construction industry, with its BIM Centre acting as a hub for innovation and the PS2.8 million Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings another pioneering facility, hosting a number of renewable and intelligent energy solutions. LSBU also boasts strong industry links and partnerships, with programmes accredited by the sector's professional bodies including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Building, among others. …
