Shakespeare Inspired My House of Cards Villain, Says Spacey

PLAYING Richard III was critical preparation for his award-winning turn as a devious politician in House Of Cards, Kevin Spacey said today before the premiere of a film charting his 10 months as the king.

Spacey, 54, won critical acclaim for his performance at the Old Vic and the documentary follows the production in London and on a tour to countries including Australia, China and Qatar.

He hoped the film might introduce new people to his work in theatre.

"If people enjoy the work I've done with Francis Underwood in House of Cards, this is where it started, this is the beginning for me of creating this character. Francis is based on Richard III," he said. "I think there's no doubt Shakespearean tones deeply influenced the series."

The production, directed by Sam Mendes, featured a mixed company of US and British actors, including Annabel Scholey and Haydn Gwynne. "It really gives a behind-the-scenes look at theatre," he said. …
