ONCE a male-dominated field, women are increasingly donning hard hats and making themselves at home on the construction site.

Apprentice of the Year nominee Hayley Collins is one of them.

Ms Collins has lived in the Northern Rivers and worked for Richmond Valley Council for more than 20 years but recently completed a Civil Construction Design Diploma through Riverina Institute of TAFE in Leeton.

"Leeton was the only campus that allowed you to actually do the course externally," Ms Collins said.

"I like what goes into constructing a road and making sure you've got the right pavement under it and the draining...I like the mixture of indoor and outdoor work life."

Before doing her diploma she worked as an engineering assistant but needed a formal qualification.

"Work encourages us to do further study in our field, so I thought it would be of benefit to me getting a formal qualification and it taught me a lot of aspects of civil construction design. …
