Keepsake Medallions Forge Unique Links to Family's Past

ADELAIDE Grendon keeps two unusual medallions in a special place in her home.

One of the sentimental keepsakes is a medallion presented to a family member who entered a winning livestock exhibit in Mackay Show in 1900.

The other is a reminder of Mrs Grendon's personal contribution to the public fundraising efforts that enabled the construction of Mackay's Memorial Pool.

As a teenager in 1948, Mrs Grendon said she visited properties in the region seeking donations for the pool.

In return, those who contributed received a gold-bronze coloured medallion inscribed with the words, 'This represents one brick in the RSL Memorial Building Mackay'.

"We were up at Mt Pelion, this side of Calen, and I had to sell them," she said.

"I had a ladies pushbike and was about 15 or 16 at the time.

"I had to go to the farms and neighbours and then I kept a medallion for myself.

"I think I sold them for about 10 shillings or something like that. …
