Algarve Trip Is Pure Excellence for Tynemet's Footballing Students; COLLEGE FOOTBALL

A GROUP of first year students on the Level Three BTEC Football Excellence course at TyneMet College got a kick out of four-day football tour of Portugal.

The group travelled to the Algarve to utilise the fantastic facilities at the Amendoeira sports resort, which has recently been used by professional clubs including Sunderland, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.

The trip saw the players stay on site in their own villa while also eating and training like professional athletes.

They used the dining facilities provided and trained on the grass playing surface provided.

The students also played in a friendly fixture against Lagos Under-19s in temperates of 25 degrees celsius - even though the match was played at 6.30 in the evening.

The fixture was a great test for the players, having to cope against European opposition and a different type of player than they were normally used to.

However it was TyneMet who took the lead when a Kane White pass found Ross Mackay inside the box and the big centre-forward showed great footwork to beat two defenders and fire home.

The hosts then hit back when a corner was not properly cleared.

The North Tynesiders, h owever, did take the lead again as the half drew to a close when a superb pass from Shane Jones saw Lewis Howe collect the ball and fire home. …
