RACING: A decision to bypass the Rockhampton carnival reaped dividends when Payteevee dove through along the inside to win the HL Black Memorial (1560m) at Ooralea.

"We missed Rocky on purpose so we could concentrate on our own Cup," trainer John Manzelmann said.

"He looks enormous and will take a massive benefit out of that run."

The fast-finishing win in yesterday's traditional lead-up race suggests Payteevee will be a massive chance in next month's Mackay Cup (1800m).

Manzelmann has dominated the HL Black Memorial in recent years, winning the race with Our Boy Lukas in 2012 and last year.

"That's three in a row now, so we're really happy." But not everything went smoothly, with Payteevee in a bit of trouble mid-race and stablemate Misty Rocket bungling the start.

"He (Payteevee) had heaps of trouble down the back and got into traffic. The horse over-raced," Manzelmann said.

"He's not an easy horse to ride at the best of times. …
