JOHNNO looks the solution to what should be another high-octane renewal of the bookmakers.co.uk Carlisle Bell at the Cumbria venue.

David Nicholls' charge probably did not find the tight turns at Chester to his advantage earlier this month, but a sharp start saw him up with the lead throughout, despite being drawn wide in stall 16.

His early efforts perhaps cost him in the finish, as he could stay on at just the one pace, eventually being beaten two-and-a-quarter lengths in third.

That was still a commendable performance, particularly as he was also shouldering a 4lb rise for the first time after previously scoring over a mile at Carlisle.

Master Of Finance stole the march on him, but if Ventura Quest reverts to his previously successful front-running tactics here, he could be one to watch.

Dark Ruler has yet to finish out of the places this year and can maintain his record in the totepool Cumberland Plate.

Alan Swinbank's charge won at Doncaster in March and has since placed at both Thirsk and Epsom, where he finished third in the Grand Metropolitan Handicap.

The winner was since thought worthy of a shot at the Coronation Cup and while connections of Dark Ruler do not harbour those kind of hopes, this looks winnable. …
