'Shrek the Musical' Is on Its Way to Alhambra

"Shrek the Musical," which ran on Broadway 2008-10 and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, opens Wednesday at Alhambra Theatre & Dining, 12000 Beach Blvd.

Shows will be nightly except Mondays through July 27, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for the first two performances are $38. Tickets Friday are $59. Tickets thereafter range from $47 to $55. Tickets for children 12 and under are $35.

For "Shrek the Musical," which is being sponsored by Dr. O Pediatric Associates of Jacksonville, a special family package of four tickets for $148 is being offered. Those wishing purchase that offer must call the box office at (904) 641-1212. Others can purchase tickets by calling the box office or going online at

All tickets include the price of a meal.


Cynthia Clawson, a singer, recording artist and television performer, will star in the musical "ACTS" at 6 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 118 E. Monroe St. The musical is based on the Pentecost celebration of the Holy Spirit descending to visit the Apostles seven weeks after Easter.

Also appearing will be Regan Courtney, a writer and composer who is Clawson's co-pastor at The Sanctuary in Austin, Texas.

In addition to appearing in "ACTS," which will be free to the public, Clawson will sing and Courtney will give a sermon during First Presbyterian's 10:30 a.m. service.


The Dover Quartet, hailed by the New Yorker as the "young American string quartet of the moment," will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Park United Methodist Church, 819 Park St.

The concert, which is being presented by Prelude Chamber Music, is free to the public. Following the concert, dessert provided by Avondale bakery Let Them Eat Cake will be served at a reception. …
