RECOGNISED for its rich history, in more ways than one, Rubyvale is home to the largest underground sapphire mine tour in Australia.

Established in 1984, Miners Heritage Walk-In Mine is a popular tourist destination for those looking to explore the gemfields, fossick for their own precious stone or view the unique collection of jewellery from gems collected right on their doorstep.

Owner Kerrie Wilson said the site where Miners Heritage sits was first mined in 1906 by one of the oldest families on the Sapphire Gemfields, Charles Hagan.

"Some of his original tunnels can be seen as part of our 30-minute underground sapphire mine tour today," Ms Wilson explained.

"Visitors can learn all about the amazing world of sapphires on a fully guided underground mine tour and spend some time in the underground museum and view our gem collection from all over the globe," she said.

One of the exciting parts of visiting Miners Heritage is the excitement and possibility of finding your own sapphires and zircons. …
