IF Luis Suarez ever bites an opponent again, I would want to see him banned from football for life.

In a way, I see that as helping him, not threatening him. This FIFA ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini, which ends his World Cup and sidelines him for four months unless he wins an appeal, is okay as far as it goes and is the right punishment for what he did.

But on top of the ban, he needs help and he must be told that if he repeats the offence, he will never play football again. He needs to get help out of fear, if you like. Three times he's done it and he cannot be allowed to do it again.

The possibility of a lifetime ban would scare him more than anything else, more than any fine, more than even this ban from the World Cup.

He needs to start a process of getting help, understanding that his entire career is on the line, that there is nowhere in the world he can play if he ever repeats it. …
