A Paws for Thought as Zizi Keeps Hit Show All in the Family

SOME actors follow in their family footsteps, but in the case of Zizi Strallen it's more apt to say family pawprints.

For she is starring in the latest touring version of Cats - a show in which her aunt, Bonnie Langford, parents Sandy Strallen and Cherida Langford and Summer Strallen have also performed.

But Zizi, who will appear as Demeter in Cats at the Theatre Royal Newcastle from July 1 to 12, is taking it all in her stride.

"The tour is going really well. Everywhere E seems to be loving it," she tells me. "We are looking forward to coming to Newcastle. It is always fun there. I performed in Matthew Bourne's Cinderella there. I was one of the step sisters, we had really good fun.

"I have a massive family connection to Cats. My aunt Bonnie was in the original cast and mum and dad in it slightly after her, all before I was born.

"My sister Summer was in it about 10 years M ago. Now I am in it. It was kind of strange. It was only really nerve-racking on my first night, as it was in Wimbledon, so as it was in London they all came. They knew all the choreography, so yes it was nerve-racking. "But it was lovely to have them there and they have been so supportive and they are really happy I am doing it as it does have that big family connection.

" I remember vividly going to see it for my seventh birthday. My mum and dad brought M me a cake in the shape of a seven and Bonnie was there and her husband, my uncle Paul. I loved it so much I wanted to go every year for my birthday.

"You wouldn't imagine it would still be selling 33 years later let alone a member of their family in it. It is such a good show and when you are in it you realise why it has been running so long, it has such a good feeling to it and everyone just loves it."

On just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to the heaviside layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. …
