CRICKETERS from a Middlesbrough primary school have earned their ticket to the finals of the biggest competition in the country after winning their regional finals.

Lingfield Primary School earned their place at next week's 2014 Drax Cup Finals - the biggest competition for Under-9s in the country - after winning the regional finals at Dunnington CC, near York.

Lingfield became the first Teesside school to win the regionals since Wheatlands, of Redcar, won the overall competition in 2007, with a close 136-123 victory over Scarborough school Gladstone Road.

This was the culmination of a great run in which Lingfield managed to successfully navigate the group stage against nine other teams before defeating East Whitby 163-144 in the semi-final.

The other semi saw Galdstone Road defeat York outfit Clifton with Rawcliffe 137-165.

Lingfield, who are based in Marton, will now play in the 2014 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds, next Wednesday, July 2, before Yorkshire and Durham's NatWest T20 Blast match. …
