Foodie Heaven in Auckland; the Thriving New Zealand City Has Found a Recipe for Success with Divine Delicacies to Suit All Palates

Article excerpt

OVER the past several years, Auckland's foodie scene has really exploded. Pacific Rim flavours and mouth-watering seafood caught fresh daily are Auckland specialities, but you'll also find cuisine from every corner of the world.

The Viaduct Harbour is one of the city's most popular dining spots, with an impressive backdrop of sleek super yachts, while the recently developed Wynyard Quarter waterfront precinct is filled with eclectic eateries offering everything from Spanish tapas to a bustling gastropub housed in a cleverly updated post-war goods shed.

The uber-hip Britomart precinct's beautiful heritage buildings have been restored to their former glory and now house a range of stylish bars, cafA[c]s and restaurants. Craft beers, superb New Zealand and international wines and elegant cocktails are all on the menu, and the fare ranges from Vietnamese and Japanese to rustic Mexican. The area's proximity to the CBD means it's also a fashionable meeting place for business lunches and after-work drinks.

Fancy freshly shucked oysters for dinner? Celebrity Kiwi chef Al Brown's award-winning Depot Eatery and Oyster Bar is always packed - and for good reason. Also in the Federal Street district (at the base of the Sky Tower, it's easy to find) is The Grill, led by Aussie chef and restaurateur Sean Connelly, and dine by Peter Gordon, as well as a cluster of other first-rate restaurants.

Auckland's latest foodie hot spot is City Works Depot, a collection of casual eateries in a revamped industrial area. Al Brown's popular Best Ugly serves up hand-rolled, woodfired bagels and award-winning chef Michael Van de Elzen's project Food Truck Garage has proven a big hit with its healthy take on fast food. Craft beer lovers might find it hard deciding between the 200 odd beers at Brother's Beer, a brewery complete with tasting lounge and retail store.

The fringe suburb of Ponsonby is perfect for coffee or brunch with the cool crowd, or wining, dining and dancing after dark. For something a bit different, join a guided gourmet food tour through Ponsonby or the inner city for tasty treats with a twist. …
