MOTORISTS continue to face major disruption near Newcastle's Central Station as the Central Gateway project moves ahead.

With East Coast Trains' work on the portico at Newcastle Central Station pretty much complete, Newcastle City Council and NE1 have moved in to step up their phase of the development.

And that will see the permanent closure of a section of Westgate Road outside the Union Rooms pub, with traffic diverted onto what is currently the opposite carriageway, around a newly created square, and back on to Collingwood Street. On Thursday the new road layout could be seen taking shape, with a new traffic island near The Long Bar separating out what will become a bus lane directing public transport west past the station, and the new general traffic lane east past the Stephenson statue.

While drivers heading for Neville Street snaked through a labyrinth of fences and signs, as workmen manned diggers and engineers inspected their work. …
