Blunder Turns Youngster's Dream into a Nightmare

IT was meant to be the ultimate family holiday, but a passport blunder has turned little Mason Williams' dream into a nightmare.

The six-year-old is due to jet to Marmaris in Turkey on Wednesday to celebrate his grandmother's wedding - but faces being the only one left at home after a passport mix-up.

His mum Toni Hedley said the ordeal is tearing the family apart.

"We booked the holiday in August last year for my mum, my sister, her partner and their baby and my son and daughter," said Toni, of Felling, Gateshead.

"My mum got married in Turkey in May and we couldn't go because the kids were in school, so we booked this as close to the school holidays as possible and I have saved all year for it."

But after being contacted by the Chronicle, HM Passport Office got in touch with Toni and said Mason's passport will be made over the weekend and should be with the family before they go on holiday.

However, whether the whole family actually gets to Turkey still hangs in the balance and Toni said she is going to travel to Liverpool on Monday to pick up the passport herself.

"They said it would be made by Monday but it could be Tuesday when the courier gets it to us," said the 23-year-old.

"I said I would go and pick it up from Liverpool on Monday, I do not want to chance it in case it does not come, even if it comes on Wednesday it is going to be very stressful. I just hope it all works out.

"I feel much better now but I am just crossing my fingers it all works out."

Toni said she submitted an application online on May 15 for a child's passport renewal for Mason before realising she would need a declaration sent in the post due to problems online. After requesting this, it did not arrive until the first week of June.

"I sent it back as soon as I got it," said Toni, who also has fouryear-old daughter Lacey-Grace Williams. …
