DepartingDeb a Hard Act to Follow; Potential Replacement Right-Backs on the Market

Article excerpt

Newcastle. UNITED were expected to spend the summer searching for strikers.

Now Mathieu Debuchy's likely exit from St James' Park means they are looking for a new right-back.

United. are resigned to losing Debuchy, but until somebody makes their move for the defender the agony will be prolonged.

Fans are sick of hearing about Arsenal's interest in one of their favourite players, but until the Gunners put their money where their mouth is another layer of uncertainty is placed over the world of the Toon Army.

In days gone by, losing a rightback would be no biggie on Barrack Road.

Although Debuchy is regarded as one of the best in his position in Europe.

That said, there are some who believe PS12million for a right-back is not bad business and, on the basis no player is bigger than the club, Newcastle should move on anybody who does not want to stay.

Debuchy arrived from Lille 18 months ago and when he left the field draped in a French flag with Yohan Cabaye after a win at Aston Villa, it felt like a revolution could be about to start as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Moussa Sissoko and Massadio Haidara also joined the party.

However, things move fast in FOOTBALL and sometimes it feels even faster when it comes to Newcastle United.

One of the reasons why Debuchy signed for the Magpies was to be alongside his big mate Cabaye (left).

No prizes for guessing no sooner than Cabaye packed his bags Debuchy would soon Follow.

The two are kindred spirits if you like.

Even if Debuchy does not get the move to Paris St-Germain to be re-united with Cabaye, he wants to play at the higher level.

At 28 you cannot really blame him if he wants to ply his trade in the Champions League.

Newcastle. fans will not care much about Debuchy's personal wish-list though - they are more bothered about who is going to replace him if, or should that really be when, he goes. …
