THERE is an age-old adage that you shouldn't buy players on the back of a good World Cup but I think it is time for Sunderland and Newcastle to just disregard that.

We all know that there have been players in previous World Cups who have performed at their absolute maximum, won themselves a contract at a big European club and then you hardly see them again.

I understand the thinking behind that but this World Cup feels different. It is certainly one of the best in my lifetime and some of the teams have been absolutely sensational, featuring players who have been a little bit off the radar.

I loved watching the US and Jermaine Jones (pictured right), who plays in Turkey, looked like exactly the sort of player who would improve both clubs.

Sunderland have done decent business so far in Jordi Gomez, Costel Pantilimon - who is a good goalkeeper - and Billy Jones. But let's be honest, they need another four or five before we can start looking forward to a bit of a new era under Gustavo Poyet. …
