A PLANNED PS40 million Thames bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico could be the first in London to take the name of a commercial sponsor.

Wandsworth council is considering selling the naming rights to the pedestrian and cycle crossing to help fund its construction.

Currently, the only sponsored Thames crossing is the Greenwich to Docklands cable car the Emirates Air Line which received PS35 million backing from the Middle East carrier.

Last night Wandsworth councillors approved a global competition for architects to come up with a design. Four possible locations have been suggested in a feasibility study by Transport for London.

Wandsworth favours two options between the new US Embassy in Nine Elms and Dolphin Square in Pimlico.

The proximity of the bridge to the embassy could make it attractive to US brands such as Coca-Cola. It is one of a series of transport improvements for Nine Elms, where thousands of homes are being built. …
