WORSENING delays for people seeking urgent specialist outpatients treatment at Mackay Base Hospital needs the intervention of the Health Minister, the Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin has demanded.

"Lawrence Springborg is the Health Minister, he needs to act now," Mr Mulherin said after Queensland Health figures for March showed 66% of people are not being seen within the recommended 30 days in this most serious category.

"Is it a financial issue or is it an issue with hospital performance?" said Mr Mulherin.

"If money, then he must find additional funds to address the delays. Or if it means flying in specialists then this he must do."

A spokesman for Mr Springborg said each region had different health challenges and the Government expected Area Health Services to put strategies in place and be methodical to solve any issues.

Queensland Health trend data, following a Question on Notice in Parliament to Mr Springborg, shows in 14 months between January 2013 and March this year the waiting time for category one specialist outpatients worsened by 9% with just 34% of the patients treated within the recommended time. …
