Cancer Brings on Blues; Music Night Will Raise Funds in Honour of Loved Ones Lost

INSPIRED by the loss of two family members and his best friend in recent years, Darren Porter will combine his love of music and cycling to raise funds for cancer research.

The blues fan and bassist is bringing a few mates together for a three-hour show at Brothers Leagues Club on July 18, which he hopes will help him reach his $2500 fundraising goal for the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Mr Porter is training for the 200km event, in which riders travel from Brisbane to Wivenhoe Dam and back again over two days in August.

Funds raised from the event go to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.

Mr Porter said the loss of his aunt, uncle and best friend were behind his decision to take part in the event this year.

His friend, Jamie Brown, died after cancer in his lungs spread through his body. He was only 43years old.

"Cancer has been a part of our lives personally and this is about supporting the cause of research to find a cure," he said. …
