CLEVELAND School athletes Sam Day and Beth Carter have qualified for September's English Schools National Finals.

Stokesley School pupil Day is through after finishing second overall in the intermediate boys' octathlon at the English Schools' Regional Combined Events Championships in Doncaster.

Eston Park's Carter also made it into the finals by placing fifth overall in her first intermediate girls' heptathlon at the Keepmoat Stadium.

It was the first time Cleveland Schools had been represented in the competition since Patrick O'Connor won a junior boys' title in 2010.

Day started his campaign with a solid leap of 6.18m in the long jump, which put him in second place.

He found himself down in fifth following his two weakest events, the javelin and discus, but he excelled himself in the next event to move back into second place and an automatic qualifying spot.

Day consolidated second place during the second day's competition despite a strong challenge from Durham duo Ben Mitchell and Liam Reveley. …
