BREAM showed on the River Tees around Yarm and Bowesfield to boost weights in the first of the Drennan Super League series.

Graham Jones of Maver Newman Scotts, topped a field of 64 with five bream and 20 skimmers on feeder and worm, for a match-winning 33lb 8oz. He fished peg 118 at Bowesfield, and caught bream of around 3lb to 4lb.

There was a tinge of colour and a slight extra flow in the water, especially the upstream reaches, and the bream responded.

Paul Stephenson of Washington, was runner-up with 31lb 1oz, also from the Bowesfield area, then came Neil Warters of North Ormesby Institute, with 30lb 7oz.

He was pegged at Yarm, a stretch not usually used this early in the season. But he made he most of his peg in the 170s with a bream and skimmer weight.

The good weights kept on coming. Darren Campbell, of Daiwa Cleveland Angling Centre, also reached 30lb, while Andy Dargue of Mosella Quaker, came fifth with 28lb 6oz and Steven Bell of Maver Newman Scotts, sixth with 27lb 10oz.

Maver Newman Scotts emerged as top team with 46; then came Mosella Quaker with 39 and Daiwa Cleveland AC on 38.

The second round takes place tomorrow on Woodlands Lake where some of the carp catches have been huge, Phil Sellars of Woodlands Tackle, winning the Saturday match with a stunning 266lb 10oz net made up of 37 carp caught on paste from Skylark Lake peg 16.

VETERAN Yarm matchman Mick Broadley is ready to bid a temporary au revoir before taking up a job in France.

And he marked his penultimate match with an impressive win.

Pegged just above the salmon pool in Thornaby AC's 35-entry July Cup on the River Tees between Croft and Hurworth, he aimed for chub from the start by fishing a strong stick-float rod, using single caster presented down a one-metre deep glide. …
