Downs Set for Relief from Icy Conditions

AFTER an icy cold dry weekend, Southern Downs residents are in for some decent winter rain with falls of up to 20mm forecast this afternoon and tomorrow morning.

There will be a brief chance for residents to thaw out in the coming days, with above average overnight temperatures forecast as cloud cover increases.

The thaw out is long-awaited for residents, who were left frozen on Saturday when temperatures plummeted to -5.9 degrees in Warwick and -7 in Stanthorpe.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Julian De Morton said temperatures had dropped well below average on the weekend, but were not quite as cold as July 8 - our coldest morning of the year.

"Over the next few days we will see a bit of cloud coming over," he said. "The cloudy conditions will mean temperatures will be slightly warmer overnight."

The bureau tips the cloudy weather to bring patchy rain and potentially a few storms this afternoon and evening.

"Areas of the Darling Downs could see 10 - 20mm of rain, which is pretty decent for this time of the year," Mr De Morton said. …
